Edo Police Arrest Quack Doctor After Newborn Vanishes from Clinic

Edo Police Arrest Quack Doctor After Newborn Vanishes from Clinic

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old quack identified as Osaze Okungbowa after a newborn went missing from his private health facility. The child’s mother reported that her baby disappeared under his care and that he fled before officers tracked him down two weeks later. Okungbowa admitted he was not a qualified doctor but an auxiliary nurse manager. He claimed he was ill on the day of the delivery and sent another nurse to assist. He said the premature infant died en route to a hospital with an incubator and was buried in an Anglican cemetery. The mother disputes his version, insisting her baby was not premature and may have been sold. She has appealed to police to help recover her child. The Police Commissioner says Okungbowa will be charged in court and that efforts are underway to arrest a second suspect still at large.

It's shocking that such an unqualified person was running a clinic unattended for that long without scrutiny.

While quacks are a real problem, shouldn't we also consider failures in our health oversight agencies here?
