Umahi Says Lagos-Calabar Highway Is Being Designed and Costed Section by Section
Works Minister David Umahi says there is no single engineering design or final total cost for the entire 750km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. He said designs, soil investigations, environmental assessments and costs are being developed separately for each section. Umahi defended the approach, arguing that terrain, bridges and road configurations differ along the route. He said it was therefore inaccurate to apply an average cost per kilometre to the full highway or treat the widely cited ₦15 trillion figure as a confirmed project total. The minister said construction began with a provisional environmental approval, while final approval has been obtained for the first 47km section. He also clarified that the proposed Edo connection is a spur to the East-West Road, not a diversion from the original Lagos-Calabar alignment.
