Oyedele Urges Governments to Avoid New Taxes on Vulnerable Citizens and Businesses
Taiwo Oyedele has said governments should avoid introducing new taxes or increasing the burden on vulnerable households and productive businesses at a time of economic pressure. Speaking during the 2026 IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, he said countries should pursue savings and improve revenue collection without placing additional strain on citizens. Oyedele said borrowing can support growth when used for job creation and inclusive development. He added that governments must balance taxation and debt, noting that both choices ultimately affect people’s ability to afford essentials such as food, healthcare and education.
