Judge Rules Schizophrenic Death Row Inmate Mentally Unfit After Claiming Immortality
A South Carolina judge paused the execution of 56-year-old John Richard Wood after mental health experts found him unfit. Wood, convicted of killing a state trooper in 2000, believes he is immortal and has already been executed and resurrected multiple times. Specialists concluded his schizophrenia prevents him from understanding the punishment. The ruling notes Wood also thought he had received a pardon and would rise again if put to death. His case now heads to the state Supreme Court for review. In a separate Texas case, 28-year-old Tanner Horner received a death sentence for kidnapping and killing seven-year-old Athena Strand. Prosecutors showed footage of Athena inside a FedEx truck after Horner hit her with his vehicle, then threatened and fatally harmed her. Her mother later said she supports the verdict.
