Iran Set to Execute First Female Protester and Her Husband
Iran plans to execute its first female protester alongside her husband for their roles in the January demonstrations. A Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Bita Hemmati and her husband, Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl, along with two other men, for allegedly attacking security forces. Rights groups say forced confessions were used in an opaque process presided over by a notorious judge. Human rights organisations warn the death penalty is being used to instil fear. They report at least 1,639 executions in 2025, a 68% increase on last year. Of those, 48 were women, many convicted of killing abusive spouses. Monitors say this is the highest annual toll since records began in 1989. They fear capital punishments will rise further amid regional tensions.
