Suspected Boko Haram IED Hits Borno APC Governorship Candidate’s Convoy
A convoy carrying the APC governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, was ambushed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents while returning to Maiduguri from Damasak on Thursday evening. Security sources said an armoured police vehicle leading the convoy struck an improvised explosive device on the Gubio-Kareto-Damasak road. The blast badly damaged the vehicle before the attackers reportedly moved to ambush the convoy. Military personnel, police officers and Civilian Joint Task Force members engaged the insurgents and repelled the attack. No casualty was reported among the candidate and the main convoy. The route remains a major security concern because of repeated insurgent movement, roadside bomb attacks and ambushes in northern Borno. Police authorities had not issued an official response at the time of reporting.
