Alia Calls for Lagos-Style Master Plan to Guide Benue’s Long-Term Development

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia says the state needs a long-term development master plan, similar to Lagos’ model, to guide successive governments and prevent abandoned projects. Speaking in Makurdi during a media chat, Alia said Benue’s 23 local government areas and estimated population of seven million require coordinated planning. He argued that reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education and roads must be tied to a clear blueprint that outlives any single administration. The governor said his administration has removed fees for Basic One to Basic Nine pupils in public schools, improved payment of salaries and pensions, and expanded infrastructure. He added that better management of agriculture, solid minerals, oil and gas could strengthen internally generated revenue and reduce reliance on federal allocations. Alia said a comprehensive plan would help preserve development gains beyond his tenure, while a proposed security summit would seek broader solutions to insecurity in the state.
