Kenyan Court Pauses Work on Land for Dangote’s Proposed $16bn Lamu Refinery

A Kenyan court has ordered parties to maintain the status quo on land proposed for Dangote Group’s $16 billion refinery project in Lamu County. The order followed a case filed by 133 residents who say the land is ancestral property and that they were not properly consulted or compensated. The residents claim the disputed area includes homes, farms, mosques, shrines and family graves. They also raised concerns about resettlement plans and environmental assessment processes. The case is due back in court on October 14, 2026. Dangote Group says the order will not stop the planned groundbreaking ceremony. The proposed refinery is expected to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily and supply petroleum products to Kenya and other East African markets if completed.
