Obi Denies Leaving Unpaid Debts for Anambra Government

Peter Obi has denied claims that his administration left debts that Anambra State is still repaying. The former governor said he cleared salaries, pensions, gratuities, contractors’ payments and suppliers’ bills before leaving office in 2014. He was responding to comments by the state government that federal allocations are still being deducted to service loans taken by past administrations. Obi said anyone with evidence that he left unpaid obligations should present it. Obi also said he left about ₦2.1 billion in a dedicated account for an erosion-control project. He maintained that the funds were preserved for the incoming administration because government should operate with continuity. The exchange adds to political debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as Obi calls for elections to be decided by voters in a free and credible process.
