Igali Blasts Umahi Over Niger Delta Roads: ‘I Feel Like Breaking My TV’
Former Nigerian ambassador Godknows Igali has criticised the Federal Government over the poor state of major roads in the Niger Delta. He said the conditions on the East-West Road and the Benin-Asaba corridor do not match claims by Works Minister David Umahi that substantial progress has been made. Speaking in a television interview, Igali said his regular trips through the region gave him firsthand experience of the gridlock and failed road sections. He said journeys that once took less than an hour now take several hours, citing the Sapele, Warri, Benin and Asaba routes. He described the situation as unfair to a region that contributes heavily to Nigeria’s revenue. Igali said residents are not seeking special treatment but equitable infrastructure, as protests over the Benin-Asaba Expressway reflect growing public frustration. The Federal Government has since moved to address the Benin-Asaba road crisis. Umahi blamed the concessionaire for removing long stretches of asphalt without adequate replacement, while President Bola Tinubu ordered a full reconstruction of the affected route.
