Accused 9/11 Plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Set for Military Trial in 2028

Accused 9/11 Plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed Set for Military Trial in 2028

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, accused of masterminding the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, and three co-defendants are scheduled to face a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay in June 2028. The trial is expected to start with the selection of a military panel on June 5, 2028. Opening statements would follow about 30 days later. The judge declined prosecutors’ request for a January 2027 start, citing unresolved evidence and compliance issues. The case has faced more than two decades of delays. A recent appeals court decision also blocked plea deals that could have allowed Mohammed and two co-defendants to plead guilty in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks.
