Guyana President Urges Unity in Emancipation Day Address

Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali has paid tribute to African ancestors in his Emancipation Day address, describing slavery and the transatlantic slave trade as among humanity’s most brutal systems. He praised formerly enslaved Africans who preserved their dignity and built self-sustaining communities through the post-emancipation Village Movement. He said African-Guyanese contributions to agriculture, commerce, public life and other sectors remain central to modern Guyana. Ali urged Guyanese to reject prejudice, division and political hostility. He called for a society founded on mutual respect, equality and shared prosperity.
