NSCDC Officer Testifies on Death of 37 Miners in Overcrowded Niger Cell
An NSCDC detention officer, Usman Isah Ndamaka, has told a judicial commission in Minna that he heard 37 detained miners crying for help inside an overcrowded, hot cell but did not open the door. He said he feared the detainees could overpower the officers on duty. According to his testimony, the miners arrived late during heavy rainfall and the facility did not have enough personnel to manage them. The officer apologised to the families of the deceased miners and accepted responsibility for failing to act. The Judicial Commission of Inquiry is examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
