40% of UNILAG Lecturers Now Sleep in Offices as Rents Soar
About 40% of University of Lagos lecturers now sleep in their offices due to a deepening housing crisis, Professor Timothy Nubi revealed at a solidarity screening and panel on inclusive housing. He noted that average rents around UNILAG have risen beyond academics’ reach. A two-bedroom flat in Akoka now goes for ₦3.5 million a year, equal to seven months of a professor’s salary. Nubi warned that Nigeria’s housing deficit has ballooned from 5 million units to between 17 and 22 million. He urged mixed-income policies and research-driven strategies to protect teachers and other middle-class workers from displacement. Speakers also cited examples from Cape Town, Nairobi and Cairo. They called for stronger laws, transitional housing schemes and public-land recovery to build affordable, socially inclusive communities.
