Nigerian AI Researcher Mary-Brenda Akoda Wins $100,000 NLNG Science Prize for Faster MRI Scans
Mary-Brenda Akoda has won the $100,000 2026 Nigeria Prize for Science and Innovation for GenScan AI, a tool designed to reduce MRI scan time by up to 90 percent. The innovation uses an AI algorithm called C-MORE to reconstruct MRI images faster while maintaining image quality. It could help hospitals serve more patients, cut waiting times and expand access to MRI services without buying additional machines. GenScan AI emerged as the winner from a record 237 entries. The judges assessed submissions based on scientific originality, technical strength, development impact and potential for commercial use. Akoda is the first woman and millennial to win the prize as an individual recipient. She is expected to receive the award at the Grand Award Night on October 9.
