Six Egyptian Journalists Detained as Newsroom’s Whereabouts Remain Unknown
Egyptian security forces arrested six journalists from the independent investigative platform Matsda2sh in raids across the country last month, according to Human Rights Watch. The journalists make up the platform’s entire editorial newsroom. Lawyers representing them said officers did not present arrest or search warrants during some of the raids. Electronic devices belonging to the journalists and their relatives were also reportedly seized, while their detention locations were not disclosed. Egypt’s Interior Ministry later acknowledged the arrests, accusing the journalists of preparing fabricated news and alleging links to the Muslim Brotherhood. The platform denied the claims, and more than 80 organisations have called for the journalists’ release.
