Ladigbolu Urges Ethical Renaissance, Says Character Is Key to Rebuilding Nigeria
Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu says Nigeria’s crises are rooted in an “ethical dislocation” that cannot be solved by institutional reforms alone. Speaking at Pa Reuben Fasoranti’s centenary lecture in Lagos, he argued that national renewal must begin with a rethinking of values. He called for a Yoruba ethical renaissance built around the concept of iwa, meaning character and moral disposition. According to him, Yoruba philosophy places a person’s worth above wealth, social status and political power, while values such as honesty, integrity, truth and respect can help challenge corruption and materialism. Ladigbolu linked the call to the legacy of Obafemi Awolowo, Fasoranti and pro-democracy activists who endured detention, exile and threats during military rule. He said their sacrifices showed that ethical leadership, courage and public responsibility remain essential to building a more just and cohesive Nigeria. Other speakers at the event reflected on Yoruba history, longevity and democratic contributions, while state governors were urged to use increased federal allocations to improve citizens’ welfare.
