Ogun Defends $7bn Deep Seaport Deal, Says Project Has Not Been Abandoned
The Ogun State Government has rejected claims that the proposed $7 billion Gateway Deep Seaport is another broken promise. It said agreements for the port and the Blue Marine Special Economic Zone were signed with DP World in Paris on September 24, 2026. The state said the project could attract more than $7 billion in investment and create up to 50,000 direct jobs. It added that the agreements were signed in the presence of President Bola Tinubu, marine and blue economy officials, Nigerian Ports Authority representatives and DP World executives. The government acknowledged that financing, regulatory approvals and construction must still be completed before the project becomes operational. It urged critics to judge the plan by its investment commitments and implementation milestones rather than political claims. It also cited road, school, health and airport projects in Ogun East while arguing that the debate should focus on verifiable development outcomes.
