Ejiofor Warns State Police Could Enable Private Control of Security Operatives

Human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has warned that state police could become tools of private influence if powerful people gain informal control over publicly funded security operatives. Using Anambra State’s Homeland Security framework as an example, he said decentralised policing could improve local security because officers may better understand their communities and local threats. However, he argued that clear legal limits and independent oversight are needed to prevent abuse. Ejiofor raised concerns about alleged unlawful arrests, brutality and the use of security personnel in private disputes. He said any future state police system must ensure that officers answer to the law, not to politically connected individuals, financiers or other influential figures.
