Nigerians Need a National Debate on Regulated Civilian Self-Defence
I am calling for an urgent national review of Nigeria’s policy on civilian self-defence and regulated firearms. Banditry, kidnapping and violent attacks have left many farmers, travellers and rural communities vulnerable, while families continue to bear the cost of ransom payments, displacement and lost livelihoods. I recognise the sacrifices of security agencies, but they cannot be present in every community or on every road at all times. Law-abiding citizens should not be left completely defenceless while armed criminals operate with confidence. I urge the authorities to consider a strictly regulated licensing system for vetted and trained citizens, as well as supervised community self-defence groups that answer to security agencies. Any framework must include background checks, mandatory training, weapon registration and severe penalties for misuse. This should be a serious national discussion, not an unregulated free-for-all.
