Canadian and Nigerian Campaigns: Have We Made Politics Too Expensive?
I took this photo in Canada and it made me reflect on how differently politics is done in Nigeria. Here, the campaign seems simple: small signs for a mayoral and councillor candidate. No loudspeakers, convoys, walls covered in posters, huge billboards or buses moving supporters around. Back home, election seasons often come with rallies, party colours, music, billboards and posters everywhere. It also raises questions about the cost of campaigning and the role of money in winning support. Have we made Nigerian politics unnecessarily expensive and noisy? Should elections focus more on ideas, competence and track record?
