INEC Must Clean the Voters’ Register Without Disenfranchising Nigerians
A credible voters’ register is the foundation of a credible election. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, INEC must remove duplicate and fraudulent registrations while protecting the rights of eligible voters. INEC’s decision to flag 268 records over suspected AI-generated photographs shows that electoral fraud is evolving. Technology can help detect suspicious images, duplicate registrations and other irregularities. However, a flagged record should lead to verification, not an automatic conclusion that a voter committed fraud. The commission should clearly explain its verification process and give affected citizens a simple way to prove their identity or correct errors. Nigerians also deserve assurance that their biometric data and personal information will be protected. Cleaning the register is necessary, but it must be done fairly. No eligible Nigerian should lose the right to vote because of an unverified suspicion, a poor-quality photograph or a technical error.
