Estonia’s Parliament to Elect New President as Ülle Madise Emerges Sole Candidate

Estonia’s parliament is due to elect a new president on Wednesday, with Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise standing as the only candidate for the largely ceremonial role. Madise, 51, was nominated by 75 lawmakers from the governing Reform Party and Eesti 200, as well as the opposition Social Democrats and conservative Isamaa. She needs support from at least 68 of the 101 members of parliament to win. If she does not secure the required two-thirds majority in the secret ballot, further voting rounds will follow. Should parliament remain deadlocked, a special electoral college made up largely of local politicians will choose the president within a month. Outgoing President Alar Karis had earlier said he would not seek another term. Madise has served as Estonia’s Chancellor of Justice since 2015, overseeing the constitutional and legal compliance of government actions and legislation.
