Tennessee Inmate Declines Last Meal After Final Bid to Stop Execution Fails

Christa Gail Pike, a Tennessee death-row inmate, has declined a last meal after her final attempts to halt her execution were rejected. Pike is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Prosecutors said Pike, who was 18 at the time, believed Slemmer was a romantic rival and lured her to a secluded location with her boyfriend. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee denied her clemency request, while the US Supreme Court also declined to delay the execution. Her lawyers said she would be the first person in Tennessee’s modern death-penalty era to be executed for an offence committed as a teenager, and the first woman executed in the state in more than 200 years.
