Yoruba Self-Determination Group Renews Oduduwa Republic Call in Ibadan
Members of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement held a gathering in Ibadan on Wednesday, renewing their call for an independent Yoruba nation known as the Oduduwa Republic. The group said worsening insecurity, kidnappings and attacks on rural communities had increased concerns about the South-West’s future. Its national leader, George Akinola, said the movement was seeking peaceful self-determination and stronger protection for indigenous communities. The group rejected restructuring, resource control and regionalism as solutions to Nigeria’s political challenges. It argued that Yoruba people should be allowed to decide their political future beyond the current administration. Its statement also made contentious claims about other ethnic groups and proposed limits on non-indigenes’ access to land, markets and sensitive political offices. The movement said its push for a sovereign Yoruba nation would be pursued peacefully.
