FG Gives Niger Miners’ Death Probe Committee Two Weeks to Establish Facts
The Federal Government has inaugurated a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Niger State. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said the panel must identify the victims, establish how and where they died, examine the legality and conditions of their detention, and investigate allegations of torture, denial of medical care, negligence or misconduct. The committee is also expected to review medical and autopsy reports, interview relevant witnesses, identify anyone responsible and recommend sanctions, compensation and reforms. The minister said suspended officers and any other culpable persons would not be shielded, while attempts to conceal evidence or intimidate witnesses would attract legal consequences. The panel, chaired by retired DSS deputy director-general Jonathan Kure, has two weeks to submit its findings, with an extension possible if required for a thorough investigation.
