How Much Do Government Convoys Really Cost Nigerian Taxpayers?
Sirens, security escorts and long lines of SUVs are common features of official travel in Nigeria. From the President and governors to other senior public officials, convoys are intended to provide transport and protection. Their full cost, however, is rarely published in one clear public record. The bill can include armoured vehicles, escort cars, fuel, repairs, tyres, communications equipment and security personnel. High-end security vehicles can cost tens or hundreds of millions of naira each, while regular movements add substantial fuel and maintenance expenses. Security for public officials is necessary, especially given Nigeria’s security challenges. But many Nigerians question whether some convoys are larger than necessary at a time of economic hardship. Greater transparency, fewer vehicles and tighter controls on non-essential trips could help reduce costs and free funds for public services.
