Murray-Bruce Urges Tinubu to Decentralise Nigeria’s Electricity Supply

Former Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has urged President Bola Tinubu to decentralise Nigeria’s electricity sector, saying the country cannot resolve its power crisis by depending mainly on the national grid. He said Nigeria had 13,625MW of installed generation capacity in April, but only about 4,286MW was available for dispatch. He also cited a sharp grid drop on 22 August, when generation reportedly fell from above 4,000MW to about 1,132MW in the evening. Murray-Bruce argued that the problem goes beyond generation. He called for reforms in transmission, distribution, metering and sector financing. He criticised the 2013 privatisation and said the metering gap has left many consumers vulnerable to estimated billing. He proposed regulated local power systems for communities and estates, especially through solar energy. He also urged state governments to take responsibility for powering public facilities such as schools, streetlights and primary healthcare centres.
