INEC Chair Warns Against AI Influence on Nigeria’s 2027 Election Results
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan says artificial intelligence can strengthen election administration, but it must never be allowed to determine the choices or outcomes of Nigerian voters. Speaking at a forum on AI and the 2027 general elections, he highlighted how the technology could support electoral processes while creating new risks for democracy. Participants warned that deepfakes, synthetic media, cyberattacks and impersonation could spread false information and weaken public confidence in candidates, officials and election institutions. They called for strong safeguards to ensure technology improves transparency without undermining voters’ decisions.
