Presidency Says Onaiyekan’s Criticism of Tinubu Was Political, Not Christian Consensus

Presidency Says Onaiyekan’s Criticism of Tinubu Was Political, Not Christian Consensus — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Presidency has dismissed Cardinal John Onaiyekan’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration as a personal and political view, rather than one representing all Christians in Nigeria. Presidential adviser Daniel Bwala made the remarks after the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria met with the President. Onaiyekan had accused the administration of prioritising electoral victory over solving Nigeria’s major problems. Bwala argued that the cardinal spoke for a section of the Catholic community and claimed that many Catholic institutions supported Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election. He said the comments were political and did not reflect the views of all Catholics. He added that Tinubu was entitled to disagree with the bishops’ assessment of the economy using available data, and urged Christian bodies to remain politically neutral.
