Why the South-East Needs an Independent Inquiry Into Political Violence
I believe the South-East needs an independent, evidence-led accountability process to examine the causes of insecurity since 2018. The process should investigate credible allegations involving political actors, security personnel, armed groups, financiers and intermediaries without treating suspicion as proof. A lawful regional truth and public safety commission could document killings, abductions, attacks, alleged security abuses and the possible financing or political exploitation of violence. It should protect witnesses, preserve records, distinguish verified facts from disputed claims and give every person named a fair opportunity to respond. Prominent political figures, including Rochas Okorocha and Orji Uzor Kalu, may be subjects for historical and policy scrutiny because of their influence in the region. However, no one should be presumed guilty without independently corroborated evidence and due process. The goal should be truth, civilian safety, justice for victims and safeguards against future political violence. The South-East needs accountability under the law, not rumour, selective blame or political vendetta.
