Brazil’s Electronic Election: Lessons for Nigeria’s Electoral System
Brazil’s election results were reportedly available within hours after voting ended. Neither leading candidate crossed the constitutional threshold for an outright victory, sending the contest to a runoff on October 25. With a population of about 215 million, Brazil conducted the election electronically without the lengthy state-by-state manual collation familiar to many Nigerians. The process was also reported to have passed without major election violence. The development raises questions for Nigeria: what practical lessons can INEC and political stakeholders take from Brazil on electronic voting, result transmission and electoral security?
