Nigeria Needs Cheaper Fuel Through Real Competition, Not a New Monopoly

Nigeria should not mistake the existence of a major refinery for affordable fuel. The real measure of petroleum-sector reform is whether ordinary Nigerians can buy petrol at prices that reduce transport, food and business costs. Dangote Refinery is a major investment, but it should compete on transparent pricing and efficiency. Importers, NNPCL and other domestic refiners should also operate under clear and fair rules. Government must avoid creating a market that protects one dominant supplier while consumers bear rising costs. The Federal Government should also account transparently for savings from subsidy removal, including palliative spending and verified beneficiaries. Nigerians need a competitive fuel market, functioning public refineries and policies that deliver practical relief rather than promises.
