Lagos Reviews Dredging and Reclamation as It Expands Water Transport
Lagos State says it is strengthening flood control, regulating sand dredging and improving the management of waterfronts and waterways. The government plans to rely more on data to track sand extraction, protect vulnerable areas and guide reclamation projects. The Waterfront Infrastructure Development Commissioner warned that unchecked excavation can damage the environment, create large craters and contribute to early road failure. He said better cooperation among the ministries responsible for environment, lands and physical planning is improving oversight. The state is also investing in jetties and water transport to reduce pressure on Lagos roads. Officials say improved movement of passengers and goods by water could cut transport costs, while waterfront projects will be assessed carefully to ensure they are safe and sustainable.
