Ezza Heritage Claim Raises Questions Over a British Museum Object Label

I saw a portrait at Compton Verney Gallery that made me question how Britain recorded Black history. The painting, dated around 1610–1620, shows an African attendant dressed in richly patterned clothing beside a young English lord. I contrast this with a museum object catalogued as Af1907,1111.14 and described as an “unknown idol from Bonny.” I believe the object is the Onyi Odu Eze royal box from Ezza, reportedly taken after the 1907 destruction of Idembia. The comparison raises questions about colonial collecting, the loss of Igbo historical names, and whether the museum’s label should be reviewed. I am seeking archival material from Colonial Office records to support the claim.
