Police, Students Lead Osun Walk Against Electoral Violence Ahead of August 15 Poll
The Nigeria Police Force has stepped up preparations for the August 15, 2026, Osun governorship election with a mix of security deployment, intelligence gathering and community engagement aimed at preventing electoral violence. On August 8, the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, working with the National Association of Nigerian Students, led a walk against electoral violence in Osun. Students from nine tertiary institutions joined personnel from the police, NDLEA, NYSC, Red Cross and other stakeholders to urge political actors and voters to reject intimidation and bloodshed. The police say at least four officers will be deployed to each of Osun’s more than 3,000 polling units. Authorities also identified cult-related tensions, youth mobilisation and attempts to monitor senior officers’ postings as possible security concerns ahead of the poll. The initiative highlights the need for prevention, dialogue and public cooperation alongside conventional policing, with the goal of ensuring voters, electoral officials and security personnel remain safe before, during and after the election.
