Police Tops Ghost Worker List as ICPC Uncovers 908 Fraudulent Payroll Accounts

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission says it uncovered 908 ghost workers across federal ministries, departments and agencies, recovering about ₦942 million. ICPC chairman Musa Aliyu revealed the probe began in 2024 after pension irregularities surfaced. Fictitious names were added to government payrolls to siphon public funds. One suspect allegedly placed his wife, son and mother-in-law on the salary list while also collecting pay for 12 other workers. The Nigeria Police Force recorded the highest number of ghost workers at 570. Other institutions affected include the National Water Resources Authority, the Federal Ministries of Works, Foreign Affairs, Defence, Power, Industry, Trade and Investment, Health, and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service.
