Justice or Persecution? CCRP Alleges Lagos DPP Is Pursuing ‘Baseless’ Murder Charges
A civil society group, the Centre for Citizens Rights Protection, has petitioned the Lagos State Attorney-General over what it calls an unsubstantiated murder prosecution against Alhaji Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi. During a peaceful protest from Ikeja Shopping Mall to Alausa, the group delivered a letter accusing the Directorate of Public Prosecutions of ignoring Akanbi’s alibi in two death investigations and of undue influence by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The petition highlights alleged police bias, the destruction of Akanbi’s property, and public statements by senior officers that undermine the presumption of innocence. It calls for an independent review, the release of prosecutorial advice, and either bail or release on reasonable terms. Copies of the petition were also sent to federal justice officials. The CCRP warns it will stage further protests if no action is taken within three days.
