Israel’s Defence Minister Says Gaza War Could Resume, Raises Displacement Plan
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has said the military is prepared to resume full-scale operations in Gaza if ordered to do so. He said Israel’s stated aim would be to defeat Hamas and pursue what he described as a voluntary migration plan for Gaza’s residents. Katz said Israel was waiting for the United States while possible destinations for Palestinians were being discussed. However, US Ambassador Mike Huckabee has denied that there is any plan to forcibly remove people from Gaza. Gaza’s population has been repeatedly displaced during the war, which began after the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. Gaza health authorities say more than 73,700 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military campaign, while Israeli official figures put the death toll from the Hamas attack at 1,221, with 251 people taken hostage.
