Kenyan Cult Leader Paul Mackenzie Convicted Over Deaths of 191 Followers
A Kenyan court has convicted self-proclaimed preacher Paul Mackenzie and 28 associates of murdering 190 children and one adult in the Shakahola Forest cult case. Prosecutors alleged that Mackenzie encouraged followers of his Good News International Church to starve themselves to death in order to “meet Jesus”. The defendants had denied 191 murder charges, while Mackenzie also faces separate manslaughter and terrorism cases. More than 400 bodies have been recovered since the cult site near Malindi was uncovered in 2023. Mackenzie’s sentencing is scheduled for November 6.
