Osun Says EFCC Cannot Freeze Its Statutory Account, Plans Court Action
Osun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, says the EFCC has no legal authority to freeze the state’s statutory account held with First Bank. Speaking in Osogbo, Jimi-Bada said the laws cited by the commission, including provisions of the Money Laundering Act and the EFCC Act, do not empower it to restrict a state government’s access to statutory funds. He said such funds are needed for salaries, pensions, healthcare, education, security and other public services. The state said it supports lawful investigations and remains willing to cooperate with anti-graft agencies. However, Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the Attorney-General to seek a court interpretation of the EFCC’s action. Jimi-Bada urged residents and stakeholders to remain calm, saying the dispute should be resolved through the courts.
