Justice ‘Crack’: When Social Media Saved a Soldier and Challenged the Army
Justice Mark Chidibere, known online as Justice Crack, disappeared between April 28 and May 1, 2026. His friends accused the Nigerian army of abducting him after he exposed poor rations for troops in the North East. On May 2, the army confirmed he was in custody and would face prosecution. His bail hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja is still pending. Crack’s video showing soldiers’ meagre meals angered a senior officer. Many fear he could have been disappeared without public pressure. Similar cases, like the alleged killing of Abubakar Idris in 2019, highlight the risks when there is no outcry. Frontline service demands sacrifice, not gourmet meals. But troops deserve basic welfare. Fair pay, life insurance and support for families are vital. Armies like those in the US and Israel honour their fallen and protect dependents. Nigerian soldiers deserve no less. I believe Nigeria is now a democracy. Force must not silence critics. Civil society groups that stand with Justice Crack deserve commendation. Their work shows the power of media and public opinion. Those who serve the people must remain accountable to us.
