Borno Commissioner Retracts Finger-Breaking Threat After Police Open Probe

Borno State Commissioner for Youths, Sports and Poverty Alleviation, Saina Buba, has formally withdrawn remarks in which he threatened punishment for people who pointed at government officials or opposed the APC. The remarks, made at an empowerment programme in Maiduguri, drew criticism from civil society groups and political observers. They said the comments could endanger dissent and undermine citizens’ constitutional rights to political choice and association. The police say they have opened an investigation into the commissioner’s comments and similar alleged inciting statements by other political figures. Hours later, Buba expressed regret, apologised to Borno residents and said his comments were not meant to be taken literally. He added that the remarks did not represent the position of the APC or the Borno State Government, which he said respects democratic rights.
