Why Nigerians Should Look Beyond Both Tinubu and Atiku
Tinubu’s administration has brought severe hardship to many Nigerians. Although the reforms may have improved some macroeconomic indicators and attracted investors, much of the expected fiscal relief has been offset by debt servicing and government spending. That does not automatically make Atiku the answer. He has been a central figure in Nigeria’s political establishment for decades, and his private-sector and privatisation agenda deserves serious scrutiny. In a country with weak institutions, privatisation can also concentrate public assets in the hands of powerful interests. Restoring fuel subsidies may offer short-term relief, but Nigerians should ask how it would be funded and whether it can be sustained. Whoever becomes president will still face huge debt, insecurity, unemployment, weak institutions and failing infrastructure. A change of president alone does not change the system. In my view, Nigerians should assess Tinubu’s record, Atiku’s promises and every credible alternative on competence, integrity and clear programmes. Nigeria needs stronger institutions, genuine political competition and leaders who can be held accountable, not another political messiah.
