After Nearly 30 Years in Canada, Czech Refugee Faces Deportation Over Return Trips

Roman Slepcsik arrived in Canada from the Czech Republic in 1997 and was granted refugee protection. He became a permanent resident in 1999. Years later, his trips back to the Czech Republic and use of a Czech passport became central to his immigration case. Canadian authorities concluded that he had voluntarily sought protection from the country he originally fled. His protected-person status was withdrawn, costing him his permanent residence. After almost three decades in Canada, he now faces removal. Should refugees who return to their home country years later risk losing their status, even after building a life abroad?
