Atiku Claims He Warned Obasanjo Against Alleged Fatal Injection in Abacha’s Prison

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he helped save Olusegun Obasanjo while the former president was imprisoned under General Sani Abacha’s military regime. Atiku alleged that he received information about a plan to administer a potentially fatal injection to Obasanjo in prison. He said he sent a warning urging Obasanjo not to accept the injection, citing the death of General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua in military custody in 1997. The allegation remains Atiku’s personal account and has not been independently established. He also said he supported Obasanjo after his release and helped build the political alliances that led to Obasanjo becoming the PDP’s presidential candidate in 1999. The claim has renewed attention on the pair’s long and bitter political history, especially their split over Obasanjo’s failed third-term agenda. It also comes as political actors begin positioning ahead of the 2027 election.
