National Assembly Considers 74 Reserved Seats for Women
The National Assembly is considering a constitutional amendment that would create 74 additional seats reserved for women: 37 in the Senate and 37 in the House of Representatives. Under the proposal, every state and the FCT would receive one extra seat in each chamber, while state Houses of Assembly would each have three additional seats for women. Existing elected seats would not be affected. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the arrangement would run for 16 years, covering four election cycles, before a review of its impact. The amendment will require approval from state Houses of Assembly. Supporters say the proposal is intended to improve women’s representation in political decision-making and strengthen protections for women, children and persons with disabilities.
