NLC and TUC Chiefs Clash Over ₦70,000 Worker Allowance
NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo have traded accusations over the Federal Government’s six-month, ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for public sector workers. The arrangement followed talks between the government and the NLC, but the TUC rejected it, saying workers need a permanent salary increase instead of temporary support. Ajaero questioned why the TUC criticised an agreement it did not negotiate. He also accused Osifo of spending much of his time abroad and asked what had happened to 90 compressed natural gas buses reportedly donated to the TUC. Osifo called Ajaero’s leadership a disappointment and said the NLC could not negotiate on behalf of TUC members. He said he was in the United Kingdom for leadership and management training, and accused Ajaero of lacking union leadership and negotiation experience. The exchange highlights continuing divisions between Nigeria’s two major labour centres over worker representation, negotiations and government agreements.
