US, NDLEA Warn of Mexican Cartel Links to Meth Labs in Nigeria
The United States and the NDLEA have warned that Mexican drug cartels may be seeking new trafficking and production routes through Africa as enforcement pressure increases in the Western Hemisphere. During a visit to the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, US official Michael Gonzales said four methamphetamine laboratories dismantled in Nigeria this year had links to Mexican criminal networks. He said drug syndicates were increasingly shifting towards synthetic substances and using interconnected international routes. NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa said recent operations in Ogun, Oyo, Enugu and Ebonyi states pointed to an attempt to establish Nigeria as a methamphetamine manufacturing base for overseas markets. He said the agency arrested Mexican and Nigerian suspects, seized substances valued at over $360 million at one site, and called for stronger cross-border cooperation against drug trafficking, illicit arms and terror financing.
