Critic Questions Betta Edu’s APC Campaign Role Amid Unresolved Graft Allegations
I am concerned that the government appears to reward officials linked to serious corruption allegations instead of ensuring accountability. Betta Edu was suspended in 2024 while serving as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation after allegations involving the transfer of N585 million meant for vulnerable Nigerians into a private account. The matter was referred to the EFCC for investigation. Reports at the time said the investigation expanded to examine several accounts and transactions connected to the ministry. Yet, I believe Nigerians have received too little public clarity on the outcome of the probe. Her reported appointment as director of women mobilisation for the APC Presidential Campaign Council has renewed questions about the administration’s anti-corruption stance. I also question the appointment of Abubakar Bagudu as Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, given his past links to international proceedings over Abacha-era funds. In my view, putting people associated with major financial controversies in positions of public trust weakens confidence in government spending and accountability. These issues deserve open answers, especially as Nigerians continue to question budget management, public spending and the fight against corruption.
